Sony already has an action camera called the FDR-X3000, but their newest product is supposedly more than just a mere action camera. The RX0 is like Sony’s point and shoot RX100 camera but in a compact and action camera shell. The Sony RX0 has a built in waterproof and shockproof body, and it features a 15.3 MP 1” stacked CMOS sensor! One comparable camera of its size is a DJI Phantom 4 Pro camera. It doesn’t have the ability to shoot 4K directly, but the RX0 can output uncompressed UHD 4K video through the HDMI port for external recorders. With the capability to shoot slow motion up to 1000 fps, this camera was primarily made to work in conjunction with other RX0s. This action camera sized RX0 is scheduled to be released in October.
Sony RX0 Specifications & Features
The Sony RX0 has a ZEISS Tessar T 24mm lens with a F4.0 aperture. Its anti-distortion shutter has a maximum shutter speed of 1/32000, which is perfect for eliminating distortion in fast moving subjects. Continuous 16 fps shooting is supported, and it has an ISO range of up to 12800; this will allow better low light performance, especially when comparing the RX0 to something like a GoPro. The stacked CMOS sensor has a DRAM chip that allows 960fps/1000fps super slow motion videos, which translates up to 40x the normal frame rate. The Sony RX0 has an S-Log2 picture profile for professionals looking to get the most dynamic range. 1080p at 50 Mb/s in XAVC codec can be shot at 24,25,30,50 and 60 fps. At only 110 grams, this camera is light, and it only measures 2 3/8 in. × 1 5/8 in. × 1 3/16 inches.
Other Sony RX0 Features
The waterproof body is IPX8 rated, so it can go as deep as 33 feet underwater. Its shock resistant shell can withstand drops from heights up to 6.5 feet. 15 RX0s can be paired together using Sony’s FA-WRC1M wireless radio commander, but 5 RX0s can be synced via mobile app. Various accessories such as a diving case and a case for different filters are also available for separate purchase.
The Sony RX0 is a more compact version of an RX100. Sony did not specifically label it as an action camera because it’s intended for professional use, but it can still be used like one. The 24mm lens has a narrower FOV compared to a GoPro’s wide angle lens, so it might not be the best camera to use for action camera situations. What the RX0 offers is the ability to shoot multiple hard to reach angles in professional formats. With a $699.99 price tag, professionals are truly the audience that Sony is aiming to reach.
